Traffic along the San Diego (405) Freeway in Huntington Beach experienced significant delays Thursday afternoon after emergency responders were called to an incident involving a person who climbed a freeway fence and was seen clinging to a pole near the Edinger Avenue area.
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), officers received reports of the incident at approximately 12:35 p.m. Authorities responded immediately after learning that an individual was positioned in a hazardous location above or adjacent to the freeway, prompting concerns for both the person’s safety and the safety of passing motorists.
As a precaution, portions of the 405 Freeway were temporarily closed while law enforcement and emergency personnel worked to safely manage the situation. The lane closures resulted in heavy congestion in both directions as commuters traveled through one of Orange County’s busiest transportation corridors.
CHP officials reported that the individual appeared to be intoxicated. However, authorities had not released the person’s identity or additional details regarding the circumstances that led to the incident. Officials also had not confirmed whether the individual was experiencing a medical or mental health crisis.
Personnel from the California Highway Patrol and the Huntington Beach Police Department remained on scene, focusing on resolving the situation through communication and de-escalation. Incidents of this nature often require specialized crisis intervention techniques, with officers prioritizing the safety and well-being of everyone involved while working toward a peaceful resolution.
By approximately 2:15 p.m., CHP Officer Tyler Yonezawa said traffic officials had begun reopening freeway lanes as Huntington Beach police continued communicating with the individual. Authorities remained committed to resolving the situation safely while minimizing additional disruption for motorists.
Officials reminded drivers to exercise caution when approaching emergency scenes, reduce their speed, and follow directions provided by law enforcement personnel. Motorists were also encouraged to consider alternate routes while crews completed their response.
As of Thursday afternoon, authorities had not announced whether the individual had been taken into protective custody or transported for medical evaluation. The incident remains under investigation, and additional information is expected to be released as it becomes available.
The California Highway Patrol and the Huntington Beach Police Department continue to monitor the situation. Further updates will be provided as officials release additional confirmed information regarding the incident and its outcome.
